1. Working principle of electric slag remelting furnace


Electric slag remelting furnace is an electric furnace equipment that uses the protection method of isolating air from slag to refine certain steels or alloys.

From the perspective of heating principle, electric slag remelting furnace is a type of resistance melting furnace. The electric slag remelting process is to immerse the lower end of the electrode in the molten slag. When AC current passes through a high resistance slag pool, a large amount of heat is generated, which melts the electrode end buried in the molten slag. The molten metal droplets produced by melting pass through the slag pool and drip into the metal melt pool. Then, they are cooled by a water-cooled crystallizer and condensed into ingots. During this process, metal droplets come into full contact with high-temperature and high alkalinity slag, generating strong metallurgical chemical reactions that refine the metal.

The key technology of electric slag remelting furnace is the slag system. In electric slag remelting furnaces, the main functions of slag are four: heat source, protection, forming, and metallurgical chemistry. The characteristics of slag are:

(1) Having high electrical resistivity, it can generate sufficient heat during the melting process to ensure metal melting, heating, and purification.

(2) It has alkalinity, so its deoxygenation and desulfurization effects are good.

(3) Does not contain stable oxides such as MnO, FeO, etc.

(4) Has good fluidity to ensure sufficient convective heat exchange and liquid physicochemical reactions at high temperatures.

(5) It has a lower melting point, generally 150-250 ℃ lower than the melting point of the molten metal, which makes the ingot form well.

(6) Having a high boiling point to prevent significant volatilization at high temperatures.

2. Electrical equipment for electric slag remelting furnace

In addition to the electric furnace transformer, the electrical equipment of the electric slag remelting furnace also includes the following three parts:

(1) The high-voltage side equipment mainly includes: isolation switches, high-voltage circuit breakers, high-voltage voltage transformers, high-voltage current transformers, etc.

(2) The low-voltage side equipment mainly includes short network busbars, low-voltage current transformers, etc.

(3) Control equipment, including regulator cabinets, operation consoles, transmission motors, etc.

Compared with other remelting equipment, the main advantages of electric slag remelting furnace are:

(1) There is a strong metallurgical chemical reaction between the molten metal and the slag, so the phosphorus and sulfur removal effects are relatively good, and the purity of the ingot is relatively high.

(2) Simple equipment, high productivity, and low investment.

(3) Slag can isolate the molten metal from the outside air and prevent external pollution.

(4) Slag and molten metal undergo metallurgical chemical reactions, which can melt metals and alloys.

(5) Non metallic inclusions in molten metal react chemically with slag, and all non-metallic inclusions are removed by the slag.

(6) Due to the fact that the ingot is cooled in a water-cooled copper crucible, its cooling rate is very fast, which results in a uniform internal structure of the ingot without segregation.

The application range of electric slag remelting furnace is very wide. It can not only be used to produce aviation bearing steel, high-temperature alloys, precision alloys, and certain non-ferrous metals, but also to produce large alloy steel ingots, large flat or plate ingots, hollow steel ingots, composite plates weighing hundreds of tons, as well as irregular castings such as melting rolls, gear blanks, turbine discs, pressure vessels, aircraft landing gear, gun barrels, etc.
