Scrap steel is the main raw material for electric arc furnace steelmaking. The quality of scrap steel directly affects the quality, cost, and productivity of electric arc furnaces. Therefore, there are several requirements for scrap steel:
(1) The surface of scrap steel should be clean and rust free, as impurities such as mud and sand in the scrap steel can reduce the conductivity of the furnace charge, prolong the melting time, and also affect the dephosphorization effect during the oxidation stage, eroding the furnace lining. When scrap steel is severely corroded or contaminated with oil, the production of steel and alloying elements will decrease, and the hydrogen content in the steel will increase.
(2) Lead, tin, arsenic, zinc, copper and other non-ferrous metals shall not be mixed into scrap steel. Lead has a high density, low melting point, and is insoluble in molten steel, making it easy to deposit in the gaps of the furnace bottom and cause steel leakage accidents. Tin, arsenic, and copper can easily cause thermal brittleness in steel.
(3) Sealed containers, flammable, explosive, and toxic substances must not be mixed into scrap steel to ensure safe production.
(4) The chemical composition of scrap steel should be clear, and the sulfur and phosphorus content should not be too high.
(5) The external dimensions of scrap steel should not be too large (cross-sectional area should not exceed 150mm 150mm, and large length should not exceed 350mm). Electric arc furnace steelmaking generally uses pig iron to increase the carbon content of the furnace charge, which usually does not exceed 30% of the furnace charge.
